Chapter 18
Tristan kicked the back door to the print shop closed, his arms full of food. He’d certainly worked up an appetite over the night, and he was sure Emma had as well.
He’d hated leaving her like that but there’d been a special meeting of the printers’ guild and he was curious to know who else had been printing the placards because he was not responsible for all of them. They’d been popping up all over the city since he’d posted the first one and he’d thought it interesting that others were following his cause.
He hadn’t learned anything other than that a handful of highly placed lords and Bothwell—who was already under suspicion—were demanding that whoever was putting up the placards must stop. Rumor was that the nobles were threatening to round up all of the printers for questioning.
Tristan would halt his duties until the fickle lords concentrated on something else. He’d been around long enough to know that their attention would wander shortly.
Unfortunately Tristan had learned all of this after he’d hung his last, and most damning, placard. Ah well. Nothing to be done about it now.
He wanted to forget all of that for the moment and return to his nice warm bed where a very willing Emma was waiting for him.
He’d had no idea what sort of Pandora’s box he’d opened when he’d introduced her to the proper way to make love but, by God, it had been magnificent.
After her initial reluctance, she’d been insatiable and he’d been more than willing to let her experiment on him.
Just thinking about it made him hard and he dumped the food on the countertop to quickly but quietly climb the stairs. He’d been far longer than he’d wanted to be because the guild meeting took more time than usual. The older printers were worried and felt the need to lecture the younger printers. Most were scared that they would be rounded up and questioned. It was never good to be questioned, especially by Bothwell’s men. Tristan understood their fear and felt bad for putting them in this position. But he wasn’t the only one who had been printing seditious placards.
He opened the door to his bedchambers to find the bed empty. Frowning he put his hand on the bedsheets where Emma had lain. They were cold, telling him that she’d left the bed some time ago.
“Emma,” he called out as he bounded down the steps to the main part of the shop. There were only three rooms down here and he knew she wasn’t in the kitchen. Neither was she in the small sitting room or the printing room.
But that’s where he found her note and his heart dropped.
Tristan,
My apologies for having to leave this way and without warning. It is time for me to return to Holyrood and my life there. My time here was magical and I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me. You will always hold a special place in my heart.
